THE ATKINS DIET
Doctor Robert Atkins introduced his low carb diet in the 70's. It didn't enjoy widespread popularity unitl Dr Atkins released a book titled "Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution". It became a major best seller and many millions started to follow the low carb diet.
So What Exactly Is The Atkins Diet?
The Atkins Diet focuses on two things. Low carbohydrate intake and high protein intake. Things like bread and rice are banned and replaced with foods like meat, cheese and eggs.
The diet has been surrounded by controversy as it seems to be in direct contradiction with the current guidelines for a healthy diet. According to Doctor Atkins the body enters a state called Ketosis when on a low carb diet. During this state of Ketosis, fat is digested to release energy due to the lack of carbohydrates.
Major Advantages Of The Atkins Diet
1. A large amount of body weight is converted to energy by the burning of body fat caused by Ketosis.
2. Hunger isn't a problem because eating a diet high in protein keeps you feeling full much longer.
3. High protein, low carb diets help to maintain blood sugar levels.
4. A lot of the bodies toxins are stored in fat and burning these fats helps to eliminate them from the body
Things To Be Aware Of With The Atkins Diet
1. You should consult your doctor or a physician before trying out the Atkins diet.
2. A daily exercise regime is recommended when following the Atkins diet.
3. Anyone with kidney problems, diabetes or pregnant should not follow the Atkins diet.
The Phases Of The Atkins Diet - Phase 1
The first phase is called Induction. It covers the first 14 days of the diet and you will shed around 15 pounds of your overall body weight during this phase. During phase 1 you consume less than 20 grams of carbohydrate.
The Phases Of The Atkins Diet - Phase 2
The amount of carbohydrate consumed is raised up to 5 grams a day.
The Phases Of The Atkins Diet - Phase 3
Phase 3 is known as pre-maintenance and during this phase the rate of weight loss will be slower than during the first two stages. You are also allowed to try other foods to see if they cause weight gain or not. The foods that do not cause weight gain can be added to the diet plan as you enter phase 4.
The Phases Of The Atkins Diet - Phase 4
Phase 4 is known as maintenance. You only enter this phase once you have reached your target weight. Carbs that do not cause weight gain can be added. This phase is all about maintaining your ideal weight.
The results achieved with the Atkins diet will depend on the individual and how closely the diet is followed. The Atkins diet can deliver major results but many people question how healthy the diet really is. If you do decide to try it I would recommend consulting with your doctor or physician before starting the diet, as you should when starting any diet or change in diet.
