BMI CALCULATION

Body Mass Index calculation is quite simple. To calculate your BMI all you really need is your height and weight. There is a different formula depending on what units you have measured yourself in. The first formula uses pounds for weight and inches for height. The second uses kilograms for weight and meters for height.

  • If you calculate a BMI less than 18 you are under weight. IF you calculate a BMI between 18.6 and 24.9 you are a healthy weight. If you calculate a BMI between 25 and 29.9 you are overweight. If you calculate a BMI of 30 or more you are obese. If you are overweight or obese you should try losing weight and consult with a doctor before doing so.

Limitations Of Body Mass Index

Body Mass Index doesn't take into account muscle mass (which is heavier pound for pound than body fat). It also doesn't account for your overall body shape. Waist to hip ratio can provide a much better indicator than BMI. In general waist to hip ratio should not exceed 0.8 for woman and 0.9 for men. Higher than this indicates an increased chance of heart attack, stoke and diabetes.
